The Gate Opened Anyway

Last night, I finally landed on the name for this blog.

She’s Wild & Worthy.

It felt right the moment I said it out loud, but if I’m being honest, I still wondered if it was the name. You know those moments where you feel like God is leading you somewhere, but you’re still waiting for that little confirmation?

Well… I got it today.

I was visiting someone who lives in a beautiful gated community. When I arrived, I sent them a text so they could remotely open the gate. I knew it might take them a minute or two to see my message, so I pulled completely off to the side to wait. I wasn’t blocking the entrance. The lane leading to the gate was completely open.

A woman pulled up behind me. Instead of simply driving around me and pulling up to the gate, she stopped behind my car and started honking. I rolled my hand out the window and motioned for her to go around me. She didn’t.

Instead, she sat there throwing her arms in the air, visibly frustrated, while continuing to lay on her horn. Then she got out of her car and started walking toward mine.

As she got close enough for me to hear her, she yelled, “If you don’t belong here, you need to leave.”

And in that exact moment…

The gate opened.

I didn’t have to explain myself.

I didn’t have to defend why I was there.

I didn’t have to convince her that I belonged.

I simply drove through the gate that had already been opened for me.

The whole drive to my friend’s house, I couldn’t stop thinking about what had just happened.

How often do people decide where we belong without knowing a single thing about us?

They see how we’re dressed.

What we drive.

Where we came from.

Our past.

Our mistakes.

Our appearance.

Our social status.

Our job title.

Our family.

And within seconds they’ve already written a story about us.

The truth is, she wasn’t really talking about a gated community.

Her words reached far beyond that gate.

“If you don’t belong here…”

How many of us have heard those words without anyone actually saying them?

Maybe you felt them walking into a new church.

Starting a new job.

Joining a Bible study.

Posting your story online.

Walking into a room where everyone else seemed to have it together.

Maybe you’ve even whispered those words to yourself.

I don’t belong here.

But today reminded me of something I’ll never forget.

People don’t get to decide where I belong.

God does.

If He opens a door, no opinion, assumption, criticism, or judgment can close it.

The beautiful thing is that Jesus spent His entire ministry welcoming the people society thought didn’t belong.

The messy.

The broken.

The overlooked.

The sinners.

The doubters.

The outcasts.

People like me.

Because here’s the truth…

I love Jesus with my whole heart.

And I’m also a complete hot mess sometimes.

I don’t have all the answers.

I don’t always say the right thing.

I still struggle.

I still fail.

I’m still learning what it looks like to follow Jesus without pretending to have it all together.

Maybe that’s exactly why She’s Wild & Worthy feels so personal.

To me, being wild isn’t about being reckless.

It’s about having the courage to be authentic.

To stop performing.

To stop trying to fit into someone else’s expectations.

To stop apologizing for the story God is writing.

And being worthy?

It’s not something we earn.

It’s something Jesus settled on the cross.

Our worth isn’t found in the opinions of strangers, the comments on social media, our accomplishments, or whether we fit into someone else’s idea of where we belong.

Our worth is found in Him.

Ironically, the woman who told me I didn’t belong became part of the confirmation that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

God has a way of doing that.

He’ll use uncomfortable moments to reveal deeper truths.

He’ll use interruptions to strengthen your faith.

He’ll even use a stranger’s harsh words to remind you whose voice actually matters.

So if you’ve ever questioned whether you belong…

If you’ve ever felt like an outsider…

If you’ve ever believed the lie that you’re too broken, too different, too loud, too quiet, too much, or not enough…

Hear me when I say this:

No one else gets to decide where you belong.

Walk through the gate God opens.

Even if someone else doesn’t understand why it’s opening for you.

Welcome again to She’s Wild & Worthy.

A place for people who love Jesus, don’t have life all figured out, and are learning that you can be wild enough to be yourself and worthy enough to belong.
