It’s interesting to me that out of all the women in the Bible, Jesus only tells us to remember one whose name we don’t even know.

“Remember Lot’s wife.” Luke 17:32

That’s it.

No explanation.

So I started reading her story.

Like most people, I always thought this story was about a woman who got curious and looked back.

But the more I read, the more I wondered if it was less about what she looked at and more about what still had her heart.

The Bible never tells us why she looked back.

Maybe that’s intentional.

Instead of answering that question for us, Scripture invites us to ask a different one:

What am I still looking back at?

As I studied her story this week, it felt especially personal.

I recently walked through a major life change, and there were moments when it would’ve been easier to keep looking back at what was familiar instead of trusting God with what was ahead.

Not because the past was necessarily better, but because it was comfortable.

I think we’ve all been there.

Sometimes following God means letting go of something we’ve known for a long time, even when we don’t yet know what’s waiting on the other side.

Maybe that’s why Jesus said, “Remember Lot’s wife.”

Not so we’d focus on her last mistake, but so we’d pay attention to our own hearts.

Because sometimes the hardest part of moving forward isn’t taking the next step.

It’s choosing not to keep looking back and trust in God while you move forward.
