Women of the Bible – Day 15: Abigail

Reading Abigail’s story made me think about how much God has been teaching me about responding instead of reacting.

Abigail was surrounded by chaos she didn’t create. Nabal made a foolish decision. David became angry. And somehow Abigail found herself standing in the middle of a situation caused by other people.

I can relate to that.

There have been plenty of moments in my life when I’ve had to deal with circumstances I didn’t create. And I haven’t always responded like Abigail. I’ve reacted from hurt. I’ve spoken because I wanted to be understood. I’ve tried to fix things, defend myself, or control situations that were never actually mine to control.

But I’m learning.

Abigail couldn’t control Nabal or David. She could only control how she showed up.

She acted when she needed to act. She spoke when she needed to speak. And sometimes, she knew when to wait.

That really stood out to me.

Not everything needs an immediate response.

God has been teaching me that peace doesn’t mean I’m weak. Silence doesn’t always mean I have nothing to say. And surrender doesn’t mean I’ve lost.

Sometimes wisdom is recognizing, this doesn’t need my reaction. It needs my prayer.

My life has taught me that I cannot control what other people do, how they treat me, what they think about me, or the decisions they make.

But I can decide what kind of woman I’m going to be in the middle of it.

I want to be a woman who asks God for wisdom before emotion gets the final say. A woman who knows when to speak and when to wait. A woman who doesn’t feel the need to fight every battle herself.

Abigail reminds me that I don’t have to match someone else’s chaos to be powerful.

Sometimes the strongest thing I can do is respond with wisdom and trust God with the rest.
